Matt DeRienzo is executive director of LION Publishers.
His journalism career started on the day after his 18th birthday as a reporter in his home state of Maine. He has worked as a reporter, editor, publisher and corporate director of news.
As editor of Digital First Media's publications in Connecticut, including the New Haven Register and Connecticut Magazine, he led a team of more than 100 journalists in coverage of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In 2014, the New Haven Register received the Robert G. McGruder Award for leadership in Newsroom Diversity.
As publisher of The Register Citizen in Torrington, Connecticut, he opened the country's first "newsroom cafe," which was recognized with the Associated Press Media Editors' Innovator of the Year Award. He was also recognized as one of Editor & Publisher magazine's annual "25 Under 35" and "10 That Do It Right" in the newspaper industry .
A resident of Litchfield, Connecticut, he teaches as an adjunct professor at Quinnipiac University and the University of New Haven, and serves on the board of directors of the Susan B. Anthony Project, a domestic violence and sexual assault support services agency. He is a former longtime board member of the United Way of Northwest Connecticut and a recipient of the organization's Lifetime Achievement Award.
